ATR was formed in the summer of 2014 after its founder Jess returned home from a lengthy tour in Iraq. Jess had worked as a combat medic and had experienced much devastation, loss, and trauma. He was also injured in combat and making music became a therapeutic escape from the exhaustion and frustration of his PTSD, TBI and other injuries.
The band ATR was originally a 3-piece, with the three members working together long distance for a time. However, a couple months into the project, the two other members decided to pursue other ventures. This left solely Jess to retain the name and production of songs.
Prior to his time in the Army, Jess had been the lead singer/guitar player for an underground 90’s punk rock band, which was signed to MCA Records. They had the pleasure of playing with such acts as Hit and Run Jimmy, At The Drive In, Agnes Gooch, The Ataris, Link 80, Slugworth, Anti-Flag, and the U.K. Subs.
Jess had only musical experience, playing a variety of instruments through the years. However, the production/recording side was a completely new territory, so he quickly had to learn the process. Jess was able to adapt to a new style of production that he enjoys… a low-fi, alt/grunge recording style that works well with the punk rock vibe of ATR's music.
Today, Jess has become the #1 guy for ATR. He plays all the instruments, engineers the recording, and produces the final tracks. He has even learned how to be his own technical support guy in the seemingly complicated world of digital music production.
Controlling all aspects of the final musical product has been a dream come true for Jess as it has allowed him to tirelessly work on a song until he is satisfied with every aspect of the final product. This was something he deeply desired in past bands, but with other members and a production staff, this was never truly possible until now.
ATR’s primary style is Alternative Punk Rock / Grunge, but Jess is always looking to incorporate new sounds or push the boundaries of what is acceptable within this genre. ATR is based out of Holland, OH, and have been focusing on establishing a well connected online multimedia presence.
In the vast world of music, collaboration can spark creativity in remarkable ways...
ATR's latest music is a testament to this journey, featuring unique contributions that underscore the beauty of remote collaboration in today's musical landscape. Some of the standout elements of these projects are my collaborations with Kellii Scott, the renowned drummer of the band Failure.
As an artist, my path has been shaped by experiences that have granted me insight into the ever evolving music scene. I was signed in the late 90s, a pivotal moment that set the tone for my career. Those early years were filled with electrifying performances and opportunities to work alongside some incredible talent in the punk rock and alternative scenes. Sharing the stage with punk bands not only fueled my passion for music but also solidified my place in a vibrant community of artists.
Fast forward to the present, where the landscape of collaboration has transformed. My recent work with Kellii Scott exemplifies how distance can be bridged through technology. Despite being miles apart, Kellii and I managed to create rhythm sections for my singles and album that were both powerful and finely tuned, echoing the dynamic quality he is known for with Failure. His ability to infuse life and energy into the tracks has been invaluable, and it perfectly complements the themes explored within ATR.
ATR reflects a blend of my past influences and contemporary sounds - a sonic collage that pays homage to my experiences all while pushing boundaries...
The name ATR itself symbolizes the chaos and beauty of life's journey, encapsulating the stories and emotions that drive us forward. Each of our songs serve as a snapshot of life's moments, rich with rhythmic prowess.
Remote collaborations has empowered artists like us to transcend geographical barriers, allowing us to connect in ways that were once unimaginable. Through file sharing, virtual meetings, and a shared vision, we can create art that reflects not just our individual talents but our collective spirit.
The music industry constantly evolves, but what remains unchanged is the raw passion that drives me to share my story through song. As I look back on my time and the stages I have shared with iconic bands, I am filled with gratitude for the journey.
Today, as I prepare to release new music, I feel a renewed sense of excitement about what lies ahead in this ever-expanding universe of music.
In conclusion, my collaborations with other artists have reinforced my belief in the power of music to connect us, regardless of distance. Together, we prove that artistic expression knows no bounds. I invite you to join me on this journey
*may ATR resonate with you as much as it does with me. -J.W.
Stay tuned for a ride filled with emotional depth and rhythmic intensity that echoes through time and space.
